News roundup from across the Interwebs
Top of the morning to you, Showtime fans. I won’t have an L Word recap for a bit, due to that tiny distraction yesterday involving Giants, Patriots and lots of kooky commercials. Meantime, here’s a news roundup to get your work week started:
E!’s Watch with Kristin reports that an agreement in the writers strike could come any minute now. Nearly all the main points have been hashed out, including payment for new-media projects, according to sources close to the deal. “There is most certainly light at the end of the tunnel, and we are rapidly approaching it,” said one person involved in the negotiations.
Jennifer Beals, who has been doing a decent amount of press lately, spoke with TV Guide about The L Word, Flashdance and making out with her good friend, Marlee Matlin. For fans of TiBette, she offers this insight into the Jodi-Bette-Tina love triangle: “I don’t think Bette believes that she’s in the driver’s seat. She doesn’t want to hurt other peoples’ feelings, but that’s not very helpful if you’re the other person. It becomes the issue of, “How do I take the risk and move from one person to the other in an honorable way?”
Michael C. Hall gave a long interview with the UK’s Unreality TV blog. Dexter is about to launch on ITV across the pond, so Hall gave his thoughts on the show and how he crafts his character. Some of the stuff he mentions will be old news to those who’ve already seen the first two seasons, but Hall’s discussion of his process for identifying with Dex is worth a read:
“As time has gone on I like Dexter more – he’s a fascinating guy to consider. As my relationship with him has evolved I have, along with him, made discoveries about what motivates Dexter and where he’s coming from. But, ultimately, the character requires an imaginative leap. I mean I obviously can’t go out and track down a killer and kill him to see what that feels like, but even if I could what it would feel like for me is not what it feels like for Dexter. So ultimately, there has to be some sort of internal alchemy you do to work it out.”
Ilene Chaiken, creator of The L Word, visited NYU and spoke at an event hosted by its LGBT student group. She told those who find the characters’ beauty and affluence unrealistic that the show has to conform to certain TV standards — the doctors on Grey Anatomy also are uncommonly attractive, she pointed out — and she told fans that The L Word came out of her desire to write about her own experience in the lesbian community. “I want to tell stories that offer a look into our world, and stories that establish the connections between us are universal,” she said. “I would say that the show doesn’t have politics but the characters do.”
