L Word recap: Season 5, episode 6
“Lights! Camera! Action!”
Although they look great, the straight actresses in Lez Girls are having some trouble convincing Jenny that they’re truly lesbians in a sex scene (That’s totally not a problem for Niki — wink, wink). After insulting their attempts, Jenny asks Adele to pencil in some workshop time to show them how to use both hands to achieve the big O.
After the blow up with Dawn and Cindi and their rules of engagement, Shane tries to smooth things over. The She Bar gals, ever entrepreneurial, see an opportunity and tell Shane she has to get Jenny to put the bar in the movie. Shane’s not really convinced, especially since in making her request, Dawn has just dissed The Planet. Dawn basically curses Shane and stalks off, while Cindi keeps oogling our favorite stylist. “Call me,” she mouths when Dawn’s back is turned. Perhaps more rules will be broken later…
At Alice’s house, she and Tasha are going through the painful break up goodbyes. Tasha gives back Alice’s key. Turns out the basketball player podcast earned Alice a tryout for a View-like talk show that’s looking for an out lesbian to add to the mix. Alice seems conflicted about the opportunity, but Tasha says it’s a dream job for her. Alice responds that she’s not sure what her dreams are anymore.
And then we’re off to TiBette, who teased us so much last episode. This time, Tina shows up early to pick up their daughter and stumbles across Bette cooking dinner, which B. never did when they were a couple. B. says she’ll cook for T., if she’d like. Moments later, they’re macking out, Jodi be damned. Tina is really into it, dirty talkin’ and all. Totally different from the almost mechanical sex scenes we got with Bette and Jodi.
Back to the film: Jenny’s off scouting locations and insists to the production people that they can’t shoot in Vancouver because it’s nothing like LA (Fun fact: The L Word is shot in Vancouver). As seems to be her knack, Adele gets William to find more money so they can go back to Hollywood, averting another potential Jenny rampage. Now in a good mood, Jenny takes mousy Adele shopping and turns her into a hottie-in-waiting. It’s not total altruism, though. Jenny pays for the makeover using money from the movie’s costume budget, and she throws in a few cute items for herself. Adele also picks out a necklace for Jenny to give Niki as a gift when shooting starts. Ethical? Methinks not.
Also this episode, we finally get a little time with Phyllis. She’s still not willing to shack up with Joyce, but after Joyce presents a compelling case, she agrees that the two of them can work together because Joyce is a great lawyer.
After all the heat between Tina and Bette, T. invites B. to share a Sunday morning meal with her and Angie at The Planet. B. says no because Jodi’s at her place, but the two of them don’t seem to be gelling at all.
At The Planet, the girls are hanging out gossiping when little Angie notices rats in the restaurant. The health inspector shuts the place down and Shane immediately suspects the She Bar gals of wreaking the revenge Dawn promised. Cut to: Kit at the firing range, practicing her aim with that Smith & Wesson she bought. She Bar doesn’t know who they’re messing with!
More Phyllis: She hosts a party that evening and the girls do their thing among the older crowd. Tina and Bette head straight for each other. Soon they’re ready to leave and commence some clothing-optional canoodling. They depart, leaving Shane and Alice with a bunch of horny 40- and 50-somethings who start stripping. There’s only one other young chick there — Phyllis’ daughter, Molly (Fun fact: Molly is played by Cybill Shepherd’s real-life daughter).
We’re treated to another sex scene with TiBette, this one somewhat more poignant than the first. Bette reveals that her relationship with Jodi isn’t what theirs was, and it starts to look like they might get back together. Life on The L Word is never that simple, though…
The next day, Phyllis asks to speak with Bette and Jodi. She wants them to be good lesbian role models for her daughter to counteract the impression she got from the wild party. Later, she mentions the controversy with Jodi’s student and Jodi announces she plans to resign. Apparently she knew all about the student’s plans for his performance art piece but kept quiet about it because she figured Bette would say no. She adds that even though she loved teaching, she has plenty of her own art to create and she has Bette to support her (’member how I said before nothing’s simple on this show?! Now Bette can’t go through with the breakup.)
Production has just started on Lez Girls, in Hollywood as Jenny demanded. Not all is quiet on the set, though. On day one they’re already behind schedule and Niki is second guessing Jenny, telling her the lines are terrible. Jenny refuses to give Niki special treatment and Niki runs off to sulk about it. Jenny chases her and they have make-up sex in Niki’s trailer. Nikki forgets that her mike is still on, so everyone hears them. So much for keeping it on the DL!
To make matters worse, William arrives on set. Adele tries to smooth the situation over, telling him the affair is good because Jenny seduced Niki to get her to agree to do the movie. The rest of the crew are calling for Jenny to be fired, but with Adele in his ear William won’t listen to a word of it.
Meantime, Alice is on the set to film another podcast. After the breakup with Tasha, she’s kind of a wreck and is having trouble keeping it together. That’s just a minor diversion in Lez Girls land, as a few neighbors soon appear on set complaining that they don’t want their neighborhood portrayed as part of the lesbian lifestyle. Seems Dawn has orchestrated the whole thing as part of her revenge on Shane and Shane’s nearest and dearest. William, aka Mr. Moneybags, pays the protesters off and crisis number 7 is averted. All in a day’s work, right?
Almost, anyway. In the hair and makeup trailer, Shane is putting the final touches on Adele’s makeover. Adele asks for a style that’s the same as Jenny’s, but later she tells Max that Shane suggested it. Very “Single While Female” of her.Right before the last shot of the day, Bette and Kit stop by to visit. Bette and Tina start flirting but no one notices because Kit, Alice and Shane are busy plotting how to get back at Dawn for all the mischief she’s been up to.
And that, my friends, is a wrap!
