Tracey Ullman pimps State of the Union
With the premiere of State of the Union just weeks away, Tracey Ullman is making the rounds to pimp the show. She did a slew of interviews with the trade magazines recently. Here are the highlights:
Of Andy Rooney, the inspiration for Ronnie Rooney, Andy’s fictional older brother, Ullman says: “I think he’s amazing. When you get into your 80s, you say whatever you want. It must be a relief. … (She imitates Rooney’s voice) ‘Umbrellas! You can’t live with them. You can’t live without them. I bought this one and it broke immediately.’ But then he’ll say something really truthful and concise. I hope he never sees my piece. I’ll just die.” In Broadcasting & Cable.
On Arianna Huffington, a friend who Ullman does spot-on impressions of on the show: “She’s a good character for us because she can comment on things.” Blog lovers, take note: In Ullman’s world, the Huffington Post author is so obsessed, she sleeps with her laptop. “I do enough blog jokes to last a lifetime,” Ullman says. In Variety.
One of Ullman’s favorite characters on the new series comes from The Sopranos. “I loved being Tony Sirico — Paulie Walnuts — for some reason. (In a New Jersey accent:) “I like the way he talks.” (Back to herself:) “I always love it when actors say that, when they say (in Jersey-speak again:), ‘I wanna do somethin’ different. I wanna show my range. I wanna play a totally different character.’ … You think, ‘You can’t!’ ” In Channel Guide magazine.
As the March 30 premiere gets closer, Ullman’s bound to do more press, and therefore more fabulous impressions. Check Tracey blog The Expatriate Mimic for updates.
