Star Wars series possibly on Showtime … does this sound like an odd fit, or is it just me?

by jill on March 18th, 2008

As some of you may have heard, from reading Entertainment Weekly and other pop culture rags, George Lucas is developing a live-action TV series around the Star Wars concept. It won’t have all the same characters we’ve gotten to know from the movies, but Lucas said it will have “all the same rules, all the same places, all the same stuff, and a lot of the same species. So it’s a familiar world, it’s just that you’re seeing a completely different side of it.” Lucas says he plans to write 100 episodes of the series and he’s reportedly shopping it to Showtime and HBO.

Somehow, I can’t see Showtime execs signing on for this. I could be wrong — maybe the Star Wars brand is strong enough; maybe there will be enough sex and drama for the series to be like a sci-fi Tudors — but it just sounds like a weird fit for the network. What do you think? Does Yoda belong on Showtime?
