Weeds without Conrad or Heylia? What are they smoking?
May 15, 2008 by Jillian Cohan
We’ve already learned that Nancy and her family leave Agrestic behind in Weeds’ fourth season and head south to the Mexican border.
But what Showtime didn’t tell us early on is that when the show premieres June 16 it will do so without two of our favorite characters: Conrad Shepherd and Heylia James.
We understand that Agrestic burned in the wildfires, but Conrad and Nancy had just started stoking the fires of their own romance. It’s hard to imagine a plot line that allows all the other main characters to come along on the Botwins’ Mexican adventure but not Nancy’s lover boy. (Celia Hodes trading her gated community for a run down border town? Really?) The show has taken us unexpected places, but this may be a stretch.
Not sure what we’ll do without our weekly dose of Romany Malco, whose on-screen chemistry with Mary-Louise Parker rocked. Much as we’re excited to see Albert Brooks guest star on Season 4, he doesn’t up the hot quotient the way Conrad did.
On the other hand, we’ll get a break from “Little Boxes” as the opening theme, reports the New York Post. Malvina Reynolds’ folk ditty will play during the credits at the premiere but after that it’ll be swapped with a tune more fitting for the show’s new seaside location.

Those are two of the best characters! I hope they have enough going on to make you forget about them…
Jill, Have you seen this Season 4 promo? http://www.sho.com/site/video/brightcove/series/title.do?bcpid=1305032372&bclid=1504426266&bctid=1564399888
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I JUST FOUND OUT THAT CONRAD AND HEYLIA ARE NOT ON THE 4TH SEASON. IM DEVASTATED; I BECAME HOOKED ON THIS SHOW AFTER THE FIST SEASON AND I’VE BEEN ANTICIPATING THEIR RETURN FOR SEASON 4. OBVIOUSLY THE WRITERS ARE NOT SMOKIN ON DAT GOOD BECAUSE THESE ARE TWO OF THE BEST CHARACTERS. NANCY AND CONRAD HAVE THE BEST CHEMISTRY AND HEYLIA PROVIDES GREAT COMEDIC RELIEF!! HOPEFULLY ITS JUST A CRUEL JOKE AND THEY’LL BE BK FOR SEASON FOUR IN A SURPRISE EPISODE……..IF NOT THEY MAY BE LOOSING ALOT OF LOYAL FANS.
Ok honestly, It really is a shame. It has been a while since I have had the luxury to enjoy a really well done and diverse series. However, like most things in life, they eventually come to an end. Why? Well, I guess people tend to sleep behind the wheel when their “fine tune machine” or for lack of a better world, “series” is on “auto-pilot.” Well for what it is worth, I am a diverse person and so, I can go with the flow, unfortunately though, it is not the same show.
I lost interest in this show after knowing Conrad and Heylia are gone. Those two held unique positions in the show. Conrad was Nancy’s only sane and dependable support system so it doesn’t make sense for her to leave him behind. And Heylia is the only lady character in the show who has her sh*t together at all times. Conrad was also the hottest guy so there is a decline in incentive on that ground.
Anyone else wonder what the hell happened to our favorite tv theme song? aside from losing some of our favorite characters we also have lost the song that is guaranteed to get stuck in your head. seriously, where did our little boxes go!? THOSE TICKY-TACKY ONES…. now the opener to the show is just bland. please give us back our beloved tunes, for the sake of humanity!!!
As the show approached the end of seasnon one (1), many of my colleagues and I were converted to becoming fans of Conrad, Nancy, and Helylia. Since Conrad and Heylia have been dropped for season four (4), the show no longer has any appeal. Personally, I feel abandoned as a result of the change that has excluded Conrad and Helylia from the current cast of characters. I have decided that the show is not worth watching anymore and I am inclined to say that my colleagues feel the same.
Oh come on give the writers credit for being brave enough to try keeping the show alive! I know it is a gamble to change the setting and loose some characters we all loved but it is still better than most shows on TV. I just watched episode 7 of weeds and I laughed my arse off! Looks like the chemistry between Nancy and the Mayor is smoking! The spanking scene was so outrageous! I think Conrad had to go so Nancy could explore new romances. Hats off to the brave move, we surely would not have a fourth season if it was not for the change!
I acknowledge that the writers should be given credit for being brave. I applaud them for their boldness. In addition, I acknowledge that many popular movies are designed primarily to entertain wide audiences and make money for their creators. I would venture to say that most current hits are often handled with diminished formal as well as an appreciative approach and not lending themselves to evaluations deeper than personal reactions to their content, execution, and cursory comparison to analogous shows. Such shows are often forgotten within months or even weeks after viewing them. Some shows tend to stay with viewers, lingering in their consciousness, long after a screening. Others have the ability to draw the same viewers back over and over. Those shows with more thought-provoking substance are also the kind most likely to inspire discussion. Shows which build cult followings and large repeat audiences can benefit from deeper analysis, as well. Nancy and Conrad had created something that fostered a plethora of opportunities in a myriad of directions. The show’s theme, plot, and characters have suffered a curt change in mapping. I am not convinced of the positive benefit of the change.
I agree with many of you. Conrad and Heylia made the show. It seems like this season they are trying way to hard and its just not the same weeds I fell in love with. It seems like they are trying to hard and over exaggerating. I also wish they would have kept the “little boxes” theme song. Oh well.. All good things come to an end.
Honestly, I can’t stop watching the show now, but ever since season 2 ended the show has gotten too far off base. For a while there I wasn’t sure the title was fitting anymore. Romany Malco absolutely made this series. He was a big part of the balancing act that had to counter the hysteria of Mary Louise-Parker. The Writers/producers made a bad choice leaving he and Heylia out.
OMG. No Conrad?! I got Season 2 on DVD for Christmas and quickly got addicted to the show. I rented Season 1 and bought Season 3 to get through a snowy weekend. It’s an amazing cast and Conrad’s earnest character and chemistry with Nancy is outstanding. Now that I know he’s not in Season 4, there’s no point in continuing to watch this show. They were a great counterbalance, brains and diversity for the cast of characters. What a shame to lose them! Bring back Conrad.
I LOVE weeds. I just got addicted to it. I’ve started watching season 4 and I am so sad that Conrad is gone! Please bring him back for season 5!
Bring back Conrad & Heylia. Enough already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BRING CONRAD BACK!!!
The show is not the same without Conrad. I HATE Estaban!!! He is disgusting in so many ways.
