Is Brotherhood’s run in Providence in jeopardy?
Showtime appears to be losing its enthusiasm for filming Brotherhood, the sprawling tale of the Caffee clan and its dealings on the street and on the hill, in Rhode Island.
The state’s considering a limit on its tax breaks for film productions because of a growing budget deficit, the Providence Journal reports.
Providence has proved more than a backdrop for Brotherhood, becoming a character in the series much the way Baltimore was in The Wire’s five seasons. But in a letter to Rhode Island lawmakers, a Showtime VP warned that capping the tax credits could have a chilling effect on the series, slated to film its third season in Providence this summer.
“Production companies including Showtime prefer to avoid states with a capped incentive because of the possibility that they would be told to ‘stand in line’ for an incentive that may not be guaranteed,” wrote executive Melinda Benedek.
The ProJo article raised the possibility that shows filming in Rhode Island might migrate to neighboring states that don’t set limits on such tax incentives.
