Emmys early look: Showtime dramas and comedies make the short list
For the first time ever, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences — the folks who bring us the Emmys every year — have pre-released Top 10 lists of comedy and drama series in contention for the awards. The full nominees list will be out in a few weeks. Happily, three Showtime shows made the short list.
Weeds scored a spot on the comedy Top 10, along with HBO shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage, both of which feel pretty irrelevant these days, and network series including Ugly Betty, The Office and Family Guy (the first nom for an animated series, btw).
In the drama category, Dexter and The Tudors both scored nominations. Dexter’s an odd inclusion, notes the New York Times’ TV Decoder, because it’s sometimes designated as a comedy.
Five finalists from each category are expected to make the official list when the noms announced July 17. The Academy decided to do the pre-release because last year some of the info leaked ahead of time.
