Weeds recap: Season 4, episode 3
“The Whole Blah Damn Thing”
We open episode 3 with Nancy trying to coax a response out of Bubbe, who’s still catatonic. Andy comes in, after sleeping outside to avoid his grandmother and the machinery keeping her alive. Andy explains to Nancy that Bubbe might prefer to die instead of being on the respirator.
Guillermo and Nancy go over the video from her first attempt to cross the border. She was stopped for a couple of reasons — all avoidable — Guillermo says. She drew attention to herself by peeing in her coffee cup and wearing a sexy dress. She hit the patrol station after a shift change, when the guards are sharpest, and she didn’t prepare her story well enough. Telling the guard about the moisturizer she wanted was good, he says, but she should have had an empty jar to show him. Nancy agrees to try again. Next time, Guillermo tells her, try wearing J. Crew and drinking less coffee.
Meanwhile, Celia’s meeting with the DEA guy, Roy. He wants to make a deal with her: If Celia can find Nancy and figure out how she’s connected to Guillermo, she may be able to prove her innocence.
In another clandestine meeting, Andy gathers Silas and Shane in his van. He doesn’t want to say that he thinks they should kill Bubbe, but Silas knows that’s where he’s going when he starts rambling about how there’s no easy way to say what he’s about to suggest. Shane agrees that it’s the humane thing to do, but Silas points out that they don’t have that many Botwins to start with, so maybe they shouldn’t get rid of one. Andy comes back with a soliloquy about how life is just blah, blah, blah, which amazingly convinces Silas that Bubbe should be put out of her misery. Shane and Silas delivers their pitch to Lenny, who tries to weaken their resolve.
Back in Agrestic, Celia is out of jail. She worms her way into Dean’s hotel and finds his cell phone in his room. Unfortunately, Shane has sent a text describing their new home as a town full of “beach nazis.” Celia heads South immediately.
Cut to Tijuana, where Nancy is again at the smugglers’ garage. She looks like she’s on a golf outing, wearing a garish pastel sweater, khaki bermuda shorts and a stiff oversize visor. This time across the border she’ll carry a ton of pot plus one of Guillermo’s guys, hidden under the backseat of the car.
In Ren-Mar, Len’s doing his best passive-agressive schtick to change Shane’s mind about killing Bubbe. He asks Shane if he’d want to kill his mom. Then he shows Shane how to pull the plug on Bubbe’s respirator. Naturally, Shane can’t make himself do it.
Nancy makes it across the border with no trouble, but she gets lost looking for Guillermo’s warehouse. When she finds it, after hitting a bunch of potholes and angering the guy under the backseat, the warehouse is empty and Guillermo is nowhere to be found.
On the beach, Andy and Len have what passes for a heart to heart among Botwin men. They eventually agree that Bubbe should go to heaven, but argue over who should pull the plug. Finally, at Lenny’s suggestion, they settle on Nancy.
When Nance arrives home (in a car packed with ganja and an illegal immigrant), Andy explains that they’ve decided to end Bubbe’s life — and that Nancy is the chosen one. She’s saved from the ugly task by Guillermo, who calls to tell her he’s waiting outside, having used her GPS system to find the house. Celia, on a surveillance mission from a car parked across the street, tries to shoot photos of Nancy and Guillermo, but can’t figure out how to work her disposable camera.
Back in Agrestic, Dean and Doug are watching Andy’s porn film from last season. They’re interrupted by the city council president who’s looking into problems with the insurance on the Agrestic city hall, which burned down in the wildfires. Doug puts her off, saying he needs to cover himself since he’s not wearing pants. He then makes his escape out the window.
Back at the house, Nancy awkwardly tries to wish Bubbe goodbye. When she tries to do the deed, she can’t find the right circuit breaker to cut power to Bubbe’s apparatus.
We hear Shane say that Bubbe’s still breathing. As the episode fades out, Nancy says: “Get Mommy a pillow.”
