’80s heartthrob Rick Springfield dishes on his Californication guest role

After their success with a fictional rock music legend last season, the creators of Californication wanted to keep the ball rolling in Season 3. They put out calls for a real-life rock star to play a version of himself — a debauched, “twisted” version of himself, actually — and it didn’t take long to find the right guy for the job.

Rick Springfield, he of the tight jeans and soulful gaze, read for the part of one of Charlie’s clients and nailed it. The singer best known for “Jesse’s Girl” (named the No. 1 Karaoke song of all time by Rolling Stone) said he’s no longer like the Rick Springfield he plays on Californication. But he remembers that guy from about 20 years ago.

“I was a bit of a predator,” Springfield recalls, saying he definitely used his celebrity to score with women. Now a family man, he dishes in this video about what we can expect from him and David Duchovny on the new season:

Californication returns to Showtime on Sunday, September 27.
