David Duchovny interview: The star talks about Californication, writers block and a third X-Files movie

Interviews with Californication star David Duchovny always seem to bounce from the sacred to the profane in about two steps.
The Yale-educated star often laces esoteric academic language with f-bombs and graphic sexual imagery. His recent chat with The Daily Beast was no exception.
DD dropped observations like this one, about how critical society is:
“We all participate daily in this shaming of the exiles and deifying of the leaders. We care about perception because we’re all utilizing human consciousness; we aren’t loners—we don’t live alone as animals—so it’s written into our genes in a way.”
Duchovny went on to say that the rare souls who live on their own terms are some of the most powerful and happiest people in the world (he used a few more $10 words than that, but you get the gist).
“The key to Hank Moody, certainly for me in acting him, is that he’s one of those guys who don’t give a fuck, just like Larry David’s character, which is a wish-fulfillment fantasy for all of us. Hank is not going to rein himself in at all because his life is a performance of his work. He’s superstitious that if he isn’t interesting, then his work won’t be interesting.”
The actor said his own experience as a frustrated writer/doctoral student at Yale informs his portrayal of Hank on Californication. But he continued to deny any correlation between the character’s sexual antics and his own rehab for sex addiction.
DD said he hopes to keep playing Hank for two or three more seasons, adding that he thinks TV series are better written than movies these days. That said, he’d still like to squeeze in a third X-Files film in 2012 even though this year’s installment was a flop.
““As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy,” he said.
