FP_2141825_Hanks_Tribute_RAM_042709The scores of fans who’ve been disappointed by Showtime’s decision not to continue The Tudors past Season 4 got some potentially good news this week: The network has added a new period drama to its lineup.

The Borgias, starring Jeremy Irons, doesn’t exactly pick up where The Tudors leaves off, but the  the series sounds like there will be plenty of intrigue, affairs, and lush costumes.

The 13-episode season will follow the Borgias clan, a crime family in Renaissance Italy. Set in in 1492, the series will revolve around patriarch Rodrigo Borgia, (Irons), leading The Hollywood Reporter to dub it “a Renaissance-era Sopranos.”

The Borgias is set to air in Spring 2011.
