Win a signed Weeds pilot script from one of the show’s stars

June 28, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

Well, I have the prize! (Now to come up with a contest) on TwitpicWeeds‘ Andy Milder, who plays Dean Hodes, embattled and embittered ex-husband of Celia, has a terrific contest going on his Twitter account.

He’s managed to get the stars of the show to sign the script from the pilot episode. He’ll give it away to a fan on Tuesday, June 30 … provided that fan answers his trivia question correctly.

Today Andy wants to know how hard you think the question should be (folks have encouraged him to make it a challenge, not something that we could easily look up on IMdB or Google.) If you don’t already follow him, add @andymilder to your Twitter stream and weigh in on the contest.

Here are the contest deets, per Andy’s tweets:

At a random point on Tuesday, June 30, I will ask a question. The 33rd person with the correct answer will win a signed Weeds script.

No more than 3 entries per person. More will disqualify you (I’ll count. I will!).

I smell a challenge, Showtime Fans. You’ve got two days to brush up on your <em>Weeds</em> trivia, so hit the books … er, or the Interwebs and iTunes … whatever works.

Cybill Shepherd and Paris Hilton are red hot for the cameras

May 5, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

The L Word’s Cybill Shepherd has been all over the red carpet lately, especially at events in support of gay rights since her daughter, actress Clementine Ford (also an L Word alum), recently came out.

On Saturday, Shepherd gave the keynote speech at the Human Rights Campaign dinner in Atlanta, where she received an award from the HRC, which named her a National Ally for Equality.

“Mommies and mommies, daddies and daddies — you are the kind of parents this world needs,” she told the crowd.

Last week, Shepherd and Ford turned out together for “An Evening with Women,” a fund raiser for the L.A. Gay & Lesbian center. Christina Aguilera performed at the gala, which was attended by tons of celebs, including Sharon Stone, Jennifer Coolidge and Paris Hilton, who snuggled up to Shepherd ’cause they were wearing the same vibrant shade of red.

Here, Shepherd and Ford vamp it up on the red carpet. You’ll find more, including the Paris pic, after the jump.

Top Gun and L Word alumna Kelly McGillis comes out

May 4, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

She had dodged the question of her sexuality for years, but not any more says Top Gun star Kelly McGillis.

In an interview with Shewire.com, the single 51-year old said she’s “done with the man thing” and definitely interested in dating a woman.

On Season 5 of The L Word, McGillis played a closeted army colonel who led the inquiry in Tasha’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” trial.

The actress, who became an 80s sex symbol after playing opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun, has two teen daughters and has been divorced twice. She said coming to terms with her sexuality was “an ongoing process from the time I was probably 12.”

For much of that time, McGillis said, she thought God was punishing her for being gay. Now, that’s over:

“Life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing and coming to terms with who and what you are and loving who you are,” said the actress.

She added that she hopes to continue acting, but has chafed under Hollywood’s conventions, including casting agents’ request that she dye her hair. “I love acting,” she said, “but I don’t want to do it at the point of losing who I really am.”

L Word star Marlee Matlin releases new book, gets star on Hollywood walk of fame

April 29, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

It’s been a busy few weeks for Marlee Matlin. The L Word alumna recently released her new book, “I’ll Scream Later,” and has been touring the country giving readings about what her life has been like after losing her hearing when she was 18 months old.

The Oscar winner and multiple Emmy nominee also has two big honors coming up next week: On May 6 she’ll get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the day after the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation honors her with the Mary Pickford Award at its Women of Distinction luncheon.

Before the book appearances, Matlin had been on the road with Dancing with the Stars, visiting 38 cities in a whirlwind cross-country tour. She was eliminated midway through the 2008 season of the show, but the judges praised her courage for competing even though she is deaf.

After spending much of her career flying across the country, the road trip was a great way to reconnect with her midwest roots, the Chicago native told USA Today. “It was fantastic. I love the truck stops where you can get anything from groceries to love advice from the cashiers to funny souvenirs.”

More photos from Matlin’s book store appearances are after the jump.

Leisha Hailey also attended the awards, as you’ll see from this red carpet pic, as did Jane Lynch. After the jump you’ll find more photos from the event.

Love it or hate it,The L Word finale was a hit for Showtime

March 12, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

OK, we all seem to agree that The L Word’s supposed cliffhanger ending actually fell off a cliff.

But we all kept watching.

The series finale logged 756,000 viewers. That’s the most eyeballs for a finale in The L Word’s six seasons and the third highest overall, according to Broadcasting & Cable (the only episodes to draw more viewers were The L Word’s first two installments in 2004).

We’ll have to wait and see if Ilene Chaiken’s women’s prison spinoff, The Farm, does as well when it debuts.

Win fabulous fashions from The L Word

March 11, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

We’ve drooled over their couture costume closet and scoured the web for the same outfits (that’s you, Jeni, Heather and Kimberly!). Now L Word fans can win some of the fabulous fashions from the show.

In honor of the series finale, CelebStyle is giving away four dresses characters wore on The L Word during its six seasons. There’s a Gucci stunner worn by Marlee Matlin, a strapless Dolce and Gabbana worn by Malaya Rivera Drew, a Paul Smith swing dress that Leisha Hailey wore and a sparkly Tory Burch number that made Pam Grier shine.

The contest runs through Sunday, March 15. You’ll find all the deets on how to enter here.

The L Word series draws to a (less than) satisfying conclusion

March 9, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

Ilene Chaiken, take a bow. The way The L Word wrapped last night was totally confounding and confusing, but the ladies looked as good as always.

What do you think, L Word fans? Am I wrong to have wanted an answer to what happened to Jenny (a loose balcony railing seems likely)? And to have seen Max’s pregnancy all the way to term? Should we have expected some resolution after six seasons of drama, drama, drama (and, of course, couture)? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Throughout its six seasons, the series has been lauded for its “groundbreaking” plotlines — taking on bisexuality, transsexuality, gay parenting (and adoption), illness and infidelity among many others — so the last episode had a lot of weighty expectations to live up to. I’m not sure it did, but maybe that’s not the point. The L Word had a good run, and a long one in an era when some series never make it past two or three seasons. So bravo, Ilene. Thanks for inviting us into your world for six seasons.

OMG The L Word’s last episode is almost here!

Rachel Shelley as Helena in The L Word Season 6 finale

Rachel Shelley as Helena in The L Word Season 6 finale

Wow, this season flew by! The L Word’s sixth and last season finale drops tomorrow night, as we find out just what happened to Jenny Schecter.

  • The ladies’ infidelities — physical and emotional — come to light.
  • Jenny, playing the reluctant wronged friend, shows Kit the tape of Bette with Kelly.
  • Alice confronts Tasha and Jamie about their relationship. They’ve not been physical, Jamie says, but she’s fallen in love with Tasha.
  • Later, Jenny’s body is discovered and the girls find themselves in the slammer with Sergeant Duffy.
  • The investigation into Jenny’s death begins.

After the jump you’ll find two video clips from the finale. In the first, Kit swears she believes Bette’s explanation of what’s up with Kelly. In the second, Alice, Tasha and Jamie share a tense meal.

March 5, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

The L Word’s finale airs in just a few days and the cast was out in force Tuesday to celebrate. Entertainment Weekly hosted a red carpet farewell event for the show at Café La Bohème in West Hollywood.

The crowd included many of the show regulars, including Rose Rollins, Mia Kirshner, Daniela Sea, Kate Moenning, Laurel Holloman and Marlee Matlin. Californication’s Evan Handler also stopped by, along with L Word alums Eric Roberts and Janina Gavankar.

Creator IIene Chaiken said in its six seasons the show had an impact on the way same-sex relationships are viewed. “We have heard stories and gotten letters over the years about how the show has changed people’s lives and outlooks, and I’m proud of that,” she said.

We can’t all fete the cast in LA, so The L Word and Human Rights Campaign got together and organized finale watch parties to be held in about a dozen states. Bounce over to the HRC site to find out if there’s one in your town.

The final season wraps Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern on Showtime. It starts with a 1-hour retrospective on the show, with the final episode of season 6 at 9 p.m. Now that you’ve got the deets, check out more party pics after the jump!
