SAG red carpet: Edie Falco

Nurse Jackie star Edie Falco got dinged by some fashion observers for her choice of this red Bottega Venetta gown for the SAG Awards (one commentator compared her outfit to a shower curtain).
The grecian look wows on the runway but maybe doesn’t flatter as well on the red carpet.

As a SAG nominee and presenter, though, Falco had to carry it off. We think she did, in part because of her comic timing. I mean who else can get away with an opening riff like this?:
“I grew up in Hawaii in a single-parent household. I struggled to succeed in a …read more

Golden Globes red carpet photo gallery

Hey there, Showtime fans. Big night at the Golden Globes, eh?
Along with wins for Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow, we saw lots of Showtime stars looking great in spite of the rain that dampened the beginning of Hollywood’s awards season.
We’re still on the hunt for red carpet photos of some of your favorite actors and actresses (Did no one photograph Edie Falco? Seriously?), but here are a bunch of paparazzi pics from the event.
Some quick thoughts:
- The guys from Dexter look like they love hanging out together
- David Duchovny, who must’ve been in the lobby when …read more

USA Today ranks Showtime stars Edie Falco, Michael C. Hall, Toni Collette & John Lithgow among the best of ‘09

As the year-end buzz fades to an echo, we have one more bit of good news for Showtime stars. USA Today put four actors from Showtime series high on its list of the best TV performances in 2009.
Edie Falco was named best comedic actress for her performance on Nurse Jackie.
“Think of every overused term of praise you’ve ever heard, including ‘brilliant,’ ’stunning,’ ‘electrifying,’ ‘riveting” and ‘genius,’ ” wrote critic Robert Bianco. “They all apply. If I had to pick one performer of either sex and in any genre, from series to movies, it would be Falco.”

Critic: Showtime provides series with strong roles for women

In a slight twist on all of the Best of the Decade/Best of the Year lists floating out there on the interwebs, The Chicago Tribune’s TV critic offers her take on the 10 key TV events of the decade. Some of them you might guess (the mocumentary aesthetic, the ascension of cable networks). But also on Maureen Ryan’s list is the rise of TV series starring women — and casting female leads “of a certain age” at that.
Shows like Weeds, Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara feature top-notch actresses in plum roles, she notes, and cable networks like Showtime …read more

Showtime stars honored with 2010 Golden Globe noms

You know they’re great. We know they’re great. Now, the Hollywood Foreign Press agrees they’re great. Some of our favorite Showtime starts got the nod for acting excellence with nominations for the 2010 Golden Globe awards.

Bravo to United States of Tara’s Toni Collette, Dexter’s Michael C. Hall, Nurse Jackie’s Edie Falco, Californication’s David Duchovny and Dexter’s John Lithgow for their noms!
Our two cents: Collette, who already scored an Emmy for her performance as Tara Gregson, Falco, who somehow breathed new life to the stale medical drama genre, and Lithgow, who gave us chills as big baddie Arthur Mitchell, deserve …read more

Nurse Jackie is back in the ER sooner than she thought

Good news! Showtime’s bringing back Nurse Jackie earlier than expected.
The network re-upped the Edie Falco dark comedy with a quickness after Season 1 got great reviews this summer. Now it’s pairing Season 2 with another phenomenal female-led series.
United States of Tara, which earned Toni Collette an Emmy for best comedic actress, will premiere just after Jackie starting on Monday, March 22, 2010.
We say bravo, programming peeps! This is almost as good a matchup as when the early seasons of Weeds and Dexter were paired together.
What do you think, Showtime Fans? What would your dream lineup be for Monday nights?

Edie Falco discusses her influences, early career and hopes for Nurse Jackie

As we get closer to the Nurse Jackie premiere on June 8, you may want to know more about star Edie Falco. Here, Falco dishes about how she chose to become an actor (it’s got something to do with children’s theater in the garage and a fortuitous bit of advice from a high school counselor), what it was like living in New York and waiting tables before she got her big break on The Sopranos (Rent was due in cash on the first of the month. If you were late, the landlord would remove the toilet from the apartment) and …read more
