Californication’s David Duchovny puts family first

July 4, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

Californication star David Duchovny and Tea Leoni have been spotted together more often this summer, including at Knicks games and on family outings like a trip to Malibu Beach, where they were recently photographed together. The couple, who separated after Duchovny went into rehab for sex addiction in October, have been amicable through the split.

“Their first priority through everything was staying close for their kids and making life as great as it can be for them,” a source told People. “They’ll always be a family.”

The way Duchovny’s handling the separation seems much more mature than how Hank Moody deals with his ex on Californication, but comments DD made recently seem to draw parallels between the actor and his character:

“There’s this heart in the show that he’s truly in love with this one woman and that he’s a good parent, in a really horrible way. These are paradoxes that I thought were mature,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “This was more adult, more articulate, less of a man-boy and more of a man. Comedy for grown-ups, starring a grown-up.”

You’ll find more photos of Leoni, Duchovny and their kids at the beach after the jump.

Double fault: David Duchovny sues for libel over cheating story

October 23, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

20th Century Fox World Premiere of

David Duchovny swears that while he may be a philandering artist at work, he’s not one at home. The Californication star this week sued Britain’s Daily Mail for the profile it ran of his tennis pro, Edit Pakay, in which she said the two of them had a very close relationship. When asked if they’d had a full-fledged affair, Pakay said she wouldn’t deny it.

Duchovny recently finished rehab for sex addiction. Soon after, he and wife of 11 years Tea Leoni announced a formal separation. They’d apparently split up months before.

DD’s lawyer is asking for at least $1 million in damages and says Pakay signed a sworn statement that she and the actor were close friends and on-court partners — nothing more. The suit says the British tabloid acted hastily and published the story even though there was doubt as to its truthfulness. E! has the full legal document here.

If the story was indeed false, the Mail may have problems. But if the info is true, and they can prove that in spite of Pakay’s statement, DD’s in a world of hurt. Maybe Californication creator Tom Kapinos should follow his star around after work — he’d find plenty of inspiration for Hank Moody’s future shenanigans.

David Duchovny’s tennis coach — and possible mistress — looks eerily like Tea Leoni

October 20, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

David Duchovny jogging in New York City

David, David, David. First the revelation that you’re a sex addict. Then the news you split with your wife of 11 years. Now we learn you may — possibly, perhaps — have been schtupping your tennis pro?

Really, for such a smart man you sure are making some bad choices. You may not be saying anything about the state of your marriage or your stint in rehab for sex addiction, but Edit Pakay, the woman who coached you on your tennis game, tells The Mail on Sunday that she “won’t deny” you had an affair.

The 28-year-old Hungarian hottie seems to know you pretty well — praising your intelligence and kindness — but she doesn’t seem to have a sense of whether you’re using her or not. She describes your relationship as a very, very close friendship. Asked if it was an affair, she says “I don’t want to say anything that might hurt David. I am not going to deny it. I don’t know what our relationship means to him.”

She’s smitten, David, and she looks just like your wife, but with darker hair. A psychologist might have something interesting to say on that front. Your publicist, of course, denies that you had a relationship with her. But she sure appears to have strong feelings for you: “People joke about having affairs with their tennis coach and I’m the tennis coach,” she says. “But I don’t want to become the butt of jokes. My feelings for him mean much more than that.”

What’s next, David? Will you take a cue from Hank Moody and dive into debauchery? Or keep your act clean, staying away from booze, sex and all that jazz? Is that even possible, given what a day on the Californication set must be like?

We’re rooting for you, but this string of news is worrisome. After all, we’ve seen you embody middle-aged self destruction for two seasons. You play the role well; almost too well. Please, for the sake of your fans, get it together man!

David Duchovny and Tea Leoni: Splitsville

October 16, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

Premiere Of Sony Pictures

Californication star David Duchovny, unlike his character on the show, is a swingin’ single. So says People, which today quoted a statement from Duchovny’s wife, Tea Leoni, saying the couple separated months ago. That’s about the time DD went into rehab for sex addiction. He’s all better now, his lawyer said a few weeks ago.

Duchovny and Leoni were spotted together last week at a street festival in NYC, but apparently haven’t been able to patch the holes in their 11-year marriage.

In the statement, the couple, pictured at left in 2005, said they’d “hoped to keep this separation private for the sake of their children.” They have two kids, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.

David Duchovny ends stint in rehab for sex addiction

Mulder meets the X-Fans

The bad boy is back. David Duchovny’s lawyer told the AP today that the Californication star checked out of rehab, where he sought treatment in late August for sex addiction.

Lawyer Stanton Stein said DD successfully completed the rehab program and plans to start filming a movie soon. When news of his sex addiction broke, it spawned many “life imitates art” story lines since Duchovny’s character on Californication, writer Hank Moody, also uses sex to escape from his problems.

Whether the man will stick to the straight and narrow in real life and on screen remains to be seen. And if that “accidental cunnilingus” from the first episode is any indication, we’re in for a wild ride. Stay tuned, friends!

David Duchovny not a cheat … but an Internet porn addict

September 1, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

Premiere Of Sony Pictures "Fun With Dick And Jane" - Arrivals

Despite his sex addiction, David Duchovny isn’t cheating on wife Tea Leoni, according to today’s New York Post.

Citing an unnamed “pal” who spoke to corporate cousin Fox News, the Post says DD isn’t shtupping anyone besides his wife, but rather is addicted to Internet porn.

The source said Leoni knew of Duchovny’s problem and was supportive of his efforts to get help. She recently canceled her appearance at the Toronto Film Festival, where she was to promote her new movie, Ghost Town, in which she co-stars with British Office phenom Ricky Gervais. She’ll apparently miss the movie’s debut to stay by her husband’s side.

Duchovny’s rehab stint won’t affect Californication’s second season, which already has 12 episodes in the can, but a Showtime spokeswoman said whether the network will sign on for a third season hasn’t been decided. Season 2 debuts on Sept. 28.

David Duchovny really a sex addict? Or playing one too well on TV?

August 31, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

X Files star David Duchovny looking 'Scully' and tired after an early morning interview

As People reported this week, David Duchovny is in rehab for sex addiction. I feel for DD, as this will mess up the family harmony he had going with Tea Leoni and their two kids. But I also can’t help but wonder if it’s the real deal, or a very well-timed publicity move.

Cynical, I know, but Californication’s new season is just four weeks away and sex addiction — along with writers block — is one of the main problems Hank Moody has on the show. Here’s a little background on the disorder.

This certainly could be a case of life imitating art. There have been rumors in the past of Duchovny possibly having a problem with sex addiction, but he quickly denied it when asked in the late 1990s. This time, he promptly released a statement saying he entered rehab voluntarily and asking that the media respect his privacy and that of his family.

With Californication’s next season a month away and Duchovny filling an executive producer role, Showtime released this brief statement: “All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time.” Again, though, it doesn’t seem to be a private time at all. The news has been picked up by media all over the globe and the blogosphere. The New York Post reports it has cost Duchovny sponsorship deals. Gossip sites, meanwhile, are loving the play on words with “The X-Files” (the sex files, Duchovny’s xxx files, etc.). And MTV went so far as to see signs of sexual compulsion in every film Duchovny has made.

So, Showtime fans, what do you think? Is Duchovny really a sex addict, or playing one too well on TV?

David Duchovny on the cover of Men’s Health’s Best Life magazine

August 8, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

'The X Files: I Want to Believe' London premiere

David Duchovny, among his other promotional efforts for the X-Files movie, sat down with a reporter from Best Life magazine for the cover story. It’s a decent celeb profile, if at times lapsing into the cliches of the genre (restaurant setting, with guests lowering their voices to overhear what the star has to say; references to the star’s storybook existence with his hot wife; tales of how his outsiderdom in high school fueled his creativity now).

It also gives us some insight into how Duchovny views his character on Californication, a show that the article notes “is really just a commentary on how complicated it is for a man to balance career, family, and, yes, an unending cavalcade of grown-up urges.”

Here’s what DD has to say on that point: “Men are so scared and ashamed of the feelings they have sometimes. The worst thing a man can admit is ‘I’m not 100 percent fulfilled by my family.’ But it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his family. I love my family, but I still want to work, I still want challenges. It took me a while to fall in love with the responsibility of family life, and it was a deep thing when I did. But I also want to run back to the cave sometimes. Forever.”

Aren’t you glad he hasn’t? Season 2 of Californication drops Sept. 28.

From the Californication set: Photos of David Duchovny and Natascha McElhone

LA may be the main setting for Californication, but it’s main characters still pine for NYC. The paparazzi recently spotted David Duchovny and Natascha McElhone on set in Central Park. Not sure how McElhone’s baby bulge will work into the new season, which debuts Sept. 28, but the two look like they’ll continue the great chemistry they had in Season 1.

X-files premiere red carpet: Californication’s newest star, Callum Rennie

August 1, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

The gentleman on the red carpet below helps move the action along in Californication’s second season. Callum Keith Rennie, familiar to Battlestar Galactica fans for playing Leoben Conoy, joins Californication as the aging rock star who hires Hank Moody, David Duchovny’s character, to write his biography. Much comedy — and temptation for Hank who’s trying to be faithful to Karen — ensues.

Here, Rennie and his date arrive at the premiere of The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Rennie had a role in the film, though not nearly as big as Duchovny’s star turn as Fox Mulder.
