Is it time for Jonathan Rhys Meyers to head back to rehab?

June 28, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

Friday January 1 2008. Sporting bloodshot eyes, Irish actor and star of The Tudors, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, leaves Villa nightclub Well, Showtime Fans, could you have guessed his sobriety wouldn’t last? Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been back in the tabloids of late.

This time he’s in the hot seat for allegedly assaulting a waiter at a bar in the Paris airport.

Jonny Boy had recently claimed he’d cleaned up after a third try at rehab, but it looks like moderation isn’t his style.

He also was arrested in 2007 after a drunk and disorderly episode at the Dublin airport (deja vu, anyone?).

In Paris, he reportedly punched a waiter in the face after the bar staff stopped serving him drinks while he was waiting for a flight home.

Everyone recognised him as the guy who plays Henry VIII,” a witness told Britain’s Daily Telegraph.

He was insulting the police and saying he could buy himself out of any problems, even throwing money on the ground so as to prove how much he was worth,” the witness added.

JRM has been ordered to appear in court in September on charges of “willful violence, outrage, hitting and threatening death, according to news reports.

With several stints in rehab behind him (one of which he denied) and a number of playboy moments documented of late, it looks like the Tudors star is teetering on the brink of self-destruction.

What do you think? Is JRM’s alcoholism harming his career? Or can this Irish lad bounce back from just about anything, like his character in Match Point?

The Tudors Jonathan Rhys Meyers is Donatella Versace’s date to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

May 11, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

Why yes, Tudors fans. That was our fave brooding Irishman squiring Donatella Versace around Washington, D.C. recently. The Tudors Jonathan Rhys Meyers cut a rug with the blonde fashion scion at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Saturday. Here are A few tidbits from her account of the night on HuffPo:

I was accompanied by actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, in Versace of course, and we were sitting with editor Graydon Carter on the Vanity Fair tables. (He is so entertaining!)

The two looked like they were having a blast on the dance floor, with Jonny cutting a dashing figure in a trim black-tie ensemble and Donatella glittering like a Tiffany chandelier.

Later, Donatella remarked on how the event was filled with glamour — the cool kind, not the forced kind — which she attributed to the changes wrought with the new presidential administration.

It was a long night but the time flew — it went so go quickly. People genuinely had fun. I’ve been to so many of this kinds of events where you have people looking at their assistants as if to say, “Can I leave now?” There was none of that. Everyone was having a good time, and I was amazed by how members of the Obama administration, high-powered people like the Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner, and the Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, were just walking round the room in a really cool and relaxed way. Rahm was carrying his jacket slung over his shoulder. These people look like they know what they are doing. They don’t need to put on an attitude to impress people.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers says he was playing golf, not in rehab

May 3, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

After media reports that he’d spent time in rehab this winter and rumors that he missed promotional appearances for The Tudors third season because of alcoholism, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is on the offensive.

He swears he just needed time to chill out, so he skipped a few awards ceremonies and TV appearances. He admitted seeing a counselor in England, The Evening Herald reports, but said people think he’s a lot “naughtier” than he really is.

“I’m actually quite a boring guy,” he said, yet he can’t seem to find his way out of the tabloids.

I spent the last week and a half playing bloody golf,” he added. “Me, Jonathan Rhys Meyers! If anyone saw me in those stupid golf clothes on the golf course, there would have been a different story written!”

Maybe it’s because he plays the role of the wild child so well. Or maybe it’s because of his on-again, off-again relationship with Reena Hammer (the photo of the two here is undated; they supposedly called off their engagement in 2007 but reconciled in 2008. They’ve rarely been photographed together since). Regardless, as long as he’s working in Hollywood, we won’t find JRM boring at all.

Tune in tonight to catch him as Henry VII on the next episode of The Tudors.

Joss Stone gives a tour of The Tudors Season 3 set

The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection - Arrivals - Fall 08 MBFW

I think it’s so funny that British soul singer Joss Stone was asked to get her frump on for her role as Anne of Cleves on the upcoming season of The Tudors. Joss has serious vocal chops and she’s totally cute, so being cast as the “Flanders Mare” to King Henry’s sleek stallion seems a leetle bit of a stretch.

In an ET interview, Joss explains that Anne, while not as gorgeous as Jane Seymour or as bewitching as Anne Boelyn, was maybe not as homely as history has made her out to be. Henry couldn’t stand her though, Joss says, so he made her out to be fugly.

Asked if she’ll get hot and heavy with Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ randy king on Season 3, Joss laughed. Henry and Anne never consumated the marriage, which made it easy to ditch Anne, she said. Just as well, Joss admitted, ’cause she’d be totally embarassed to film a sex scene.

For more from Joss and Jonny about Season 3, bounce over to ET Online to watch the full clip.

Season 3 of The Tudors is back on Showtime in April 2009.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers named best actor in a TV drama

June 18, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

The Golden Nymph awards may not be as well known in America as the Golden Globes, but the Monte Carlo TV awards ceremony still drew tons of Hollywood heavyweights last weekend. Among the stars on display: Jonathan Rhys Meyers, with Reena Hammer in tow, of course. They don’t look that happy on the red carpet, even though Jonny scored a nymph statuette for his excellent work as King Henry VIII on The Tudors.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers talks about The Tudors third season

June 5, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

Jonathan-Rhys-Meyers-arrives-in-Dublin-May-2008With The Tudors second season behind him, The Los Angeles Times found Jonathan Rhys Meyers in a reflective mood. The uber intense star, shown here arriving at the Dublin airport in advance of shooting the third season, covered a lot of ground in a recent interview:

• He compared himself to an NBA athlete in terms of his preparation for playing Henry VII — “it’s always game time.”

• He said when shooting’s done on The Tudors, he’d be happy not to see a doublet, knee-high boot or pair of boobs for a while.

• He gave the standard “it’s an honor just to be nominated” answer to the question of how he handles award season.

Even better, he dished about the new season of the show, which starts shooting June 16. Find out what he has to say after the jump.

Ask and we shall receive: The Tudors renewed for third season!

April 23, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

Henry-and-Anne-season-2Looks like we’ll still get to hang with Henry after Anne loses her head. Showtime just announced that it’s renewed The Tudors for a third season, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers on the throne again as Henry VII.

The network originally didn’t plan to run The Tudors past Anne’s beheading, which comes late in Season 2. But fan and critical pleas apparently fell on receptive ears.

“The Tudors is now a fixture for us at Showtime and we’re on our way to completing the entire saga of all six wives of Henry VIII,” entertainment president Bob Greenblatt said, announcing the deal.

Those of you who voted for the full six-wives story arc in our Showtimefan poll, commence to gloating. You outnumbered other voters two to one and predicted the future!

Filming for Season 3 starts June 16 in Dublin. The 2009 air date has not been released yet.

Should The Tudors get a third season?

April 9, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

King-Henry-and-Charles-Brandon-horseback-ridingShowtime doesn’t plan on it, but NY Post TV critic Linda Stasi argues yes, yes, yes! because the show covers one of the most interesting times in British history.

If fans had their way, she writes, the series would have six seasons — one for each of Henry VII’s wives. But there’s a downside to running the show after Anne’s beheading, she says. “It’s the hot! hot! hot! men that keep so many of us women tuning in week after week. And, tragically, after Anne lost her head in real life and Henry got injured in a jousting bout, the hunk-of-a king started to pork up like Raymond Burr.”

Jonathan Rhys Meyers must not be put in a fat suit, she insists, so The Tudors reign must end before Henry’s beauty fades. What do you think?:
