Weeds’ Mary-Louise Parker says her comments about nude scene were misconstrued

June 7, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

Weeds Mary-Louise Parker at the 6119 Maurice and Ilana Sunderland Fashion Line Show September 4 2008If all that brouhaha about Mary-Louise Parker not wanting to do the infamous bathtub scene on Weeds last season seemed like much ado about nothing, that’s because it was.

Parker recently told TVGuide.com that the interview with More magazine implied she was bitter over having to do the nude scene, when what she meant was that she and the director had different views of the editing needed for the scene.

“They made it sound like I was like, ‘They made me take my clothes off and chained me to the bathtub,’” MLP said. The Season 4 finale stripped Nancy naked literally and symbolically as she grappled with the mess she’d made of her family’s life by getting in bed with a Mexican drug lord.

Parker said it wasn’t the nudity that bothered her, but the way the scene kept cutting back to her in the tub, which she found distracting.

“I mean, if you know me, it’s like, someone sneezes and I take my clothes off,” she said. “I’m naked in Esquire in August. I was naked on the set the other day. I’m always naked.”

Weeds fifth season premieres June 8 (tomorrow, folks!!) at 10 p.m. Eastern on Showtime.

Mary-Louise Parker says she regrets nudity on Weeds last season

May 19, 2009 by Jillian Cohan

WeedsMary-Louise Parker, the June cover girl for More magazine, said she’s bitter about losing an argument with the director on whether she had to be naked in the bathtub scene in the season four finale, when Andy comes in and she unloads on him about all the dangerous decisions she’s made in becoming a drug trafficker.

Sex scenes she’d filmed before were fine, Parker said in the interview, but she thought the bathtub scene was gratuitous.

“I knew it was going to be on the Internet: ‘Mary Louise shows off her big nipples,’” she said. “I wish I hadn’t done that. I was goaded into it.”

Even if she regretted it, one of the show’s executive producers said it’s one of the best scenes Parker has ever done. Roberto Benabib said Nancy is so beaten down in that moment, her nakedness expresses her vulnerability. “We felt at that point in her life, her defenses had been so thoroughly stripped away, there was a nonchalance to the nudity that informed the scene,” he said.

And Parker said in the same interview that she likes how extreme Nancy’s character is. The flat-out comedic moments don’t appeal to her, nor do the ones when Nancy is a sweet mother, because Parker doesn’t think they ring true to who Nancy is. She’s complicated and selfish, yet people are drawn to her.

In the interview Parker also talks about dating as a single mom and reveals that she has a tendency toward exhibitionism. “I just like danger in general,” she said. “I don’t like to hang out of an airplane, I don’t want to get on a motorcycle.  But I like to reveal myself, and I like things that are psychologically dangerous.  That’s why I like acting.”

Catch Parker in all her fascinating complexity when Weeds returns for Season 5 on June 8.

Mary-Louise Parker shares her hopes for Nancy on next season’s Weeds

September 30, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

We wrapped Weeds fourth season with a huge cliffhanger. Now Mary-Louise Parker’s sharing her hopes for Nancy in Season 5.

Her character has “a certain disconnect with who she is and her parenting skills,” MLP tells TV Guide, and that’s part of what makes the show so interesting.

Will Esteban spare his baby mama’s life next season? Parker won’t say for sure, but reveals “I hope it gets ugly.” Check out this video with more from the Weeds star on the red carpet at the Dexter and Californication premieres:

Julie Bowen on the red carpet at LA Confidential’s pre-Emmy party

September 23, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

Julie Bowen has a great body — a fact underscored by the nickname given to her character this season on Weeds. We saw her “Yoga Ass” from various flattering angles in Season 4, yet it’s nowhere to be seen in the party dress she chose this weekend for Los Angeles Confidential magazine’s pre-Emmy bash at Les Deux nightclub in Hollywood:

Los Angeles Confidential Magazine Anual Emmy Pre-Party

The taupe and indigo frock highlights Bowen’s chiseled shoulders but turns into a shapeless (and wrinkled) mess around her midsection and derriere. At least she looks like she’s having fun vamping for the cameras. Check out a few more red carpet pics after the jump.

Weeds recap: Season 4, episode 12

September 9, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

“Till we meet again”

Wowzers. Lots to recap folks, and only one more Weedtastic episode after this one… here we go: While Nancy and Agent Till talk in the park, Phil, his partner (and lover) looks on from a distance. Nancy wants the DEA to ensure she’ll be protected and that no one will be able to trace info to her. She doesn’t want witness protection — she just wants to get away clean.

Weeds preview: Season 4, episode 12

September 8, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

Hey there, Showtime fans! Hard to believe the fourth season of Weeds is almost over. To get in the spirit of the penultimate episode, take a look at the previews Chandra has posted on GrrlTV.com:

Mary-Louise Parker/WeedsTill We Meet Again” is the next to last episode. It does a fine job building up some tension leading into next week’s finale, which has the long title “If You Work for a Living, Why Do You Kill Yourself Working?” Good question, too.

On “Till We Meet Again,” everything is rosy for Celia, who learns to love rehab before becoming determined to set things right with her family. Even Shane has a great time of it as he wows his women with his knack for getting drugs. He just better hope his mother doesn’t find out (and you know she is).

Speaking of which, things aren’t so great for Nancy or Doug. In the first case, Nancy’s frustration causes her to have a chat with the DEA, while Doug must deal with the discovery that Andy and Maria have been going at it.

GrrlTV has the preview videos, too. The first one followsNancy after she’s talked to the DEA. In the second, Shane’s up to no good. Enjoy ‘em while you can!

Super cute Hunter Parrish interview about Weeds Season 4

August 24, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

I’m not a regular viewer of Chelsea Lately, comedienne Chelsea Handler’s talk show, so I missed this adorable interview with Hunter Parrish when it aired last month. Luckily, I stumbled across it on YouTube.

The Weeds star is totally cute — self-deprecating, charming, a little gawky — as he talks about: filming Season 4, in which Silas beds a MILF; snagging a part in the Broadway show Spring Awakening; turning down a role in High School Musical, the movie that made his buddy Zac Efron super famous; and going to Vegas with his parents for his 21st birthday.

Weeds recap: Season 4, episode 10

August 20, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

Nancy and Esteban wakes up in bed together. They snuggle but the quiet moment is interrupted when one of Esteban’s henchmen comes to rouse him.

In a hotel room, Celia’s passed out and Isabelle takes a room service delivery. Celia’s bff from Agrestic, Pamela, is there along with Dean and a lady who says she’s an intervention specialist. Celia wakes up and realizes she’s been handcuffed to the bed, with handcuffs Pamela provided. Now that the intervention is underway, Pamela reads Celia a letter, saying she needs to get herself together and go back to being the inspirational woman who led the PTO and city council with such energy, and who created excellent distractions when she and Pamela went to the mall and Pamela wanted to shoplift at Forever 21.

Weeds preview: The Love Circle Overlap

August 17, 2008 by Jillian Cohan

If you thought last week’s Weeds episode was a stunner, this week’s show sounds awesome too. Here’s Chandra’s take. Hit up Grrl TV to see the videos she mentions:

Mary-Louise Parker/WeedsI’ll never understand how Weeds showrunners manage to pack so much into one tiny half-hour episode, but they do. Expect more wall-to-wall plot action on August 18th’s “The Love Circle Overlap.”

First and foremost, Nancy will learn something new about the tunnel to Mexico she recently discovered at the maternity store, and it has to do with more than just drugs. Also, Doug might finally have the chance to reunite with Maria, Shane prepares for a threesome (yes, you’ve got the right idea in mind), and Celia becomes the target of an intervention.

In the two sneak peek videos, see Celia get mad with her family in Intervention and Shane get up to no good three times over in Pierced Strangers. I’ve watched the first clip with Celia/Elizabeth Perkins about five times — it’s a riot.

Happy viewing, folks!
